The EMKP Legacy Digitisation Grant is accepting applications to support the digitisation and documentation of collections related to endangered material knowledge systems at risk of deterioration or destruction.

The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (EMKP) was established in 2018 to support the preservation of material knowledge systems that are at risk of being lost, particularly in regions where funding opportunities are limited.

The Legacy Digitisation Grant funds the digitisation and documentation of collections and research records related to endangered material knowledge, such as fieldnotes, photographs, negatives, videos, audio recordings, and objects. The grant is intended for collections where the material knowledge under study was, or is now, endangered, and where the physical state of the records or lack of digitisation threatens their long-term preservation and accessibility.

Grants are awarded for up to 1 year with a maximum value of £20,000, and community engagement activities may be funded up to £1,000. Funding covers costs such as cataloguing, digitising, equipment, basic preservation measures, and travel, but excludes institutional overheads, capital building, and routine staffing costs. Training for successful applicants is provided in London, with associated costs covered separately by EMKP.

Applications are open to individuals affiliated with a host institution, as well as host institutions or community organisations lacking digitisation infrastructure. There are no nationality restrictions for the Principal Applicant, but all applicants must demonstrate relevant experience and provide institutional support. Ethical considerations, including consent from custodians and communities, are paramount, and applicants must adhere to international standards for digitisation and data management.
