Open Call for Proposals: Financial Support to Third Parties for Death Penalty Abolition
Donor Name: World Coalition Against the Death Penalty
The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty provides grants to civil society organizations and informal networks in Africa and the SWANA region for activities that advance the abolition of the death penalty.
The Global Consortium for Death Penalty Abolition, formed by 13 abolitionist organizations and co-funded by the European Union, is dedicated to amplifying the global movement for the universal abolition of the death penalty. This initiative supports civil society in target countries through financial support to third parties, focusing on strategic advocacy and capacity building.
Financial support is available for activities implemented between April 2026 and March 2028 in 30 target countries across Africa and the SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) region. Eligible activities include national and regional advocacy, capacity building for parliamentarians, government officials, and capital-defense lawyers, engagement with international human rights mechanisms, improving conditions for people on death row, supporting families of those charged with capital offences, research and data collection, documentation and litigation support, coalition building, awareness campaigns, crisis response, and activities addressing intersectional discrimination faced by women and LGBTQIA+ people in the judicial process.
The overall objective is to move towards the universal abolition of the death penalty. Specific objectives include reducing the use of capital punishment in retentionist countries, supporting legal abolition in countries that are abolitionist in practice, and preventing the reintroduction of the death penalty in countries where it is already abolished in law. Outputs sought include increased influence of the abolitionist movement and a more diverse and expanded abolitionist ecosystem at global, regional, and national levels.
This call offers grants ranging from 8,000 € to 15,000 € (approximately $8,600 to $16,200 USD), with a maximum of EUR 60,000 per organization. The overall strategic financial support under the program ranges from 200 € to 45,000 € for various activities and regions.
Eligible applicants are civil society organizations (CSOs) and informal networks of people opposed to the death penalty, based in Africa or the SWANA region. Applicants must be non-profit or social enterprises with a mandate to protect and promote human rights. One organization may apply for and receive several grants, up to a maximum of EUR 60,000 in total.
