The AI Economy Institute Cohort 4 offers research grants to university- and research-institution-affiliated investigators studying how organizational choices shape AI’s effects on work and the distribution of economic value.

The fourth cohort builds on that research by asking how organizational choices shape the creation and distribution of value among workers, firms, entrepreneurs, and society. The global call accepts qualitative, quantitative, theoretical, and mixed-methods proposals.

Priority considerations include interdisciplinary work, novel methods including AI-enabled approaches, efficient use of existing datasets or established data-collection relationships, comparisons across countries or regions, and actionable insights for people and institutions.

Research may examine when AI complements human work, substitutes for it, or creates new economic activity, and how workflow design, team structure, governance, incentives, accountability, and expertise development shape those outcomes. Proposals may also investigate labor displacement, capability erosion, or new oversight burdens and provide practical guidance for policymakers, educators, employers, and workers.

Each selected proposal receives a single research grant of $75,000 and is eligible for one travel allowance: $7,500 for awardees based in the United States, Canada, or Mexico, or $20,000 for all other awardees. Including the travel allowance, total support ranges from $82,500 to $95,000, depending on awardee location.

The Senior Fellows Program follows a structured model spanning approximately 12 months. The research period runs from January through June 2027, with an in-person workshop and book chapter submission scheduled for March 2027, manuscript submission in September 2027, and book publication in July 2027.

Applicants must be researchers affiliated with accredited universities or research institutions worldwide. Principal Investigators and co-Principal Investigators must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree at the time of application, and each proposal may include up to two Principal Investigators.

Applications include an applicant biosketch and a project overview of no more than one page. The biosketch includes a personal statement of up to 300 words, a one-page professional summary, up to three contributions to science, current research support, and citation metrics; the project overview covers the research question, methods, contribution, policy relevance, applicability, and up to three target journals.
