The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program offers established international artists residencies in Berlin, providing time and financial support to pursue their work across visual arts, film, literature, and music and sound without production obligations.

For more than six decades, the program has welcomed creative practitioners from around the world to Berlin. It awards 18 residencies each year, and the experience has begun lasting relationships between many fellows and the city.

The residencies are offered in visual arts, film, literature, and music and sound. Fellows can spend their time publicly or privately, focused on their work and ideas, with no production obligations.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend for living expenses and rent, a furnished apartment, and travel and luggage expenses. Travel costs may also be covered for partners and children who reside in Berlin for the entire fellowship. Optional German language courses are available, and health, accident, and liability insurance may be provided when necessary, with premiums deducted from stipend payments.

Residencies last twelve months in visual arts, literature, and music, and six months in film. The application period for the 2028 residencies opened on October 19, 2026.

The program is intended for established international artists who have developed their own artistic voice and standing. There is no upper age limit, and an academic background is not required; doctoral students may apply.

Emerging artists in the early stages of their development, applicants still in school or who have just completed their education, German nationals, artists residing primarily in Germany subject to the stated exception, and program alumni are not eligible. German nationals living abroad may apply only if they can verify that they have resided primarily in the country from which they apply for at least six years. Artists who initially registered in Germany no more than fifteen months before the application deadline are excepted from the residence-based exclusion.
