The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden Doctoral Fellowship, offered by TUD Dresden University of Technology, supports early-career Art History researchers pursuing doctoral research on energy cultures in transition through an interdisciplinary research and qualification program.

The third funding phase runs from April 2027 to September 2030 under the guiding theme “Energy Cultures in Transition,” examining energy as a cultural phenomenon shaped by aesthetic, historical, political, ecological, economic, and socio-technological practices and systems.

In Art History, the research focus spans the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and includes artistic engagements with ecological crises and social, gender-related, and political conflicts; extractivism, material resources, and (neo-)colonial power relations; AI and digital image cultures; and visual politics in energy, climate, and resource conflicts.

The research examines how modern energy regimes have shaped infrastructures, subjectivities, power relations, progress narratives, geopolitical orders, ecologies, and knowledge systems, and how these in turn shape energy regimes.

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month (approximately US$2,000), plus EUR 150 for material costs (approximately US$200) and, where applicable, EUR 315 per child as a family supplement (approximately US$300). Within available project funds, the Schaufler Lab also covers conference travel costs.

The fellowship lasts two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension, and starts on April 1, 2027.

Applicants must hold an excellent university degree in Art History or Visual Culture Studies and have English skills at a minimum C1 level. The dissertation may be written in German or English; applicants choosing German must have the corresponding German language skills.
