The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden Doctoral Fellowship, offered by TUD Dresden University of Technology, supports early-career sociology researchers pursuing doctoral research on energy, culture, and society through an interdisciplinary research program.

The third funding phase of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, running from April 2027 to September 2030, is guided by the theme “Energy Cultures in Transition.” It examines energy as a cultural phenomenon shaped by aesthetic, historical, political, ecological, economic, and socio-technological practices and systems.

Research may address how energy production and supply are negotiated through infrastructures, institutions, communities, networks, organizations, markets, and related externalities. Relevant questions also include how energy transitions are represented and communicated, the links between energy, labor, environment, and consumer culture, and the roles of colonialism, gender, geopolitics, education, and social justice in shaping energy futures.

The fellowship is for two years beginning April 1, 2027, with the option of a 1.5-year extension. Fellows undertake independent research and academic qualification toward a doctorate, writing a sociology dissertation on a topic within “Energy Cultures in Transition.”

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month, plus a grant for material costs of EUR 150 and, where applicable, a family supplement of EUR 315 per child. The EUR 1,850 monthly stipend is approximately USD 2,000. Within the limits of available project funds, the Schaufler Lab covers conference travel costs.

Applicants must hold an excellent university degree in sociology or a comparable social science field and have relevant experience in sociological analysis of the environment, technology, or energy, and/or Science and Technology Studies. Applicants need English proficiency at C1 level or higher; German language skills are required if the dissertation is written in German and are otherwise desirable but not mandatory.

Fellows are expected to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue, conduct joint research with artists through the Schaufler Residency, participate in the Kolleg’s English-language training program, and contribute to science communication and outreach. The program provides shared office space, a structured qualification program, access to research infrastructure, and opportunities including Research Studios and writing retreats.
