Applications are now open for the Doctoral Fellowship Program to support early-career researchers pursuing a doctorate in Political Science, International Relations, or Political Sociology through research on how energy cultures and transitions shape political, social, and cultural life.

The theme encompasses questions about how energy regimes—from petromodernity to nuclear culture and post-carbon futures—shape infrastructures, power relations, geopolitical orders, ecologies, and knowledge systems. Relevant perspectives include Energy Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, and Digital Humanities, with particular attention to energy transitions, resource economies, labour, environment, and social justice.

In International Politics, relevant research may examine transnational energy transitions and social movements, distributional conflicts within global governance and transnational networks, cross-border labour relations, international objectives such as CO2 reduction, or global issues in local contexts using qualitative, comparative, or ethnographic methods.

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month, plus a grant for material costs of EUR 150 and, where applicable, a family supplement of EUR 315 per child. Conference travel costs may also be covered within the available project funds. The fellowship begins on April 1, 2027, and lasts two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension. Fellows are expected to complete a doctorate at TUD and participate in the Kolleg’s English-language training program.

Applicants must hold an excellent master’s degree or equivalent in Political Science or a comparable social science discipline and have relevant experience with social science methods, International Politics, and Social Movement Studies. English proficiency at C1 level or above is required; applicants writing their dissertation in German must have the corresponding German-language skills.

Applications in German or English must include the completed online application form, a motivation letter, a tabular CV with academic career details, a copy of the most recent university degree certificate, and a research-project exposé with work and time schedule of no more than 20,000 characters. Applicants may also provide details of their family situation.
