Applications open for 2027 Language Legacies Grant Program

Donor Name: Endangered Language Fund

The Language Legacies program has announced its applications to support language activists and researchers documenting, revitalizing, or archiving endangered languages, with projects expected to benefit both native communities and the field of linguistics.

The program considers language endangerment as a continuum. The language involved must be in danger of disappearing within a generation or two, and its position on that continuum is one factor in funding decisions. Funding supports language documentation and revitalization, linguistic fieldwork, and archival efforts and initiatives.

Work that serves both the native community and the field of linguistics is most likely to be funded, though projects with more immediate applicability to one group may also be considered. Support for publication is a low priority.

Eligible expenses include consultant fees, equipment, travel, and archival expenses; administrative or indirect costs are not allowed. Grants in this round are expected to be less than $4,000 and to average about $2,000. Grants are for a one-year period, though extensions may be applied for.

Language activists and researchers from any country may apply. Awards can be made to institutions, but administrative or indirect costs are not covered. Many languages in the northwestern United States are not eligible for this program and are covered instead by the Native Voices Endowment program.

Applications must be submitted through the Project Application Portal; emailed applications are no longer accepted. The application requests a project title, an abstract of up to 150 words, the language’s ISO 639-3 code, the amount requested in US dollars, and primary project manager information.

Applicants must upload a project description, an itemized budget, and relevant letters of support in PDF format. The project description should address the language’s endangerment, existing support for the language, materials to be collected or produced, and value to the native community and linguistic science. Applicants must address the status of any relevant institutional review approval.
