Temwa Malawi

Mission and Background: Temwa is a UK-founded, Malawi-based non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to developing self-sufficient communities in remote and hard-to-reach areas of northern Malawi. Established in 2003, Temwa works with local communities to address poverty and build climate resilience through various development projects.

Geographical Focus: Operating primarily in the Nkhata Bay North region, Temwa targets remote areas with limited access to basic amenities such as electricity and running water. This region, home to approximately 30,000 people, faces significant challenges including the impact of the HIV & AIDS epidemic.

Program Areas: Temwa implements community-driven projects across four key areas:

  1. Health Education: Conducting mobile testing clinics and promoting HIV awareness and testing to combat the spread of HIV & AIDS.
  2. Skills Development: Supporting entrepreneurship and providing training to empower individuals to create sustainable livelihoods.
  3. Agriculture and Irrigation: Training farmers in sustainable agriculture practices and promoting irrigation techniques to enhance food security.
  4. Schools Support: Improving literacy skills, providing secondary school bursaries, and supporting educational infrastructure.

Organizational Structure: Temwa operates with a team of 23 full-time employees in Malawi, overseen by experienced project managers. In the UK, the organization is managed by a part-time manager, development manager, and fundraising coordinator, along with volunteers and interns. The majority of funds raised are directly allocated to programs in Malawi, ensuring minimal administrative costs.

Achievements: Since its inception, Temwa has achieved significant milestones:

  • Trained over 6,200 farmers in sustainable livelihoods.
  • Conducted HIV testing for approximately 35,900 individuals through mobile clinics.
  • Supported 1,300 entrepreneurs in setting up micro-enterprises.
  • Improved literacy skills for 2,334 students and provided secondary school bursaries for 201 students.
  • Planted over 1.6 million trees to combat climate change.
  • Provided access to clean water in homes for 13,146 people.

Empowering Communities for a Sustainable Future: Temwa’s community-led approach empowers local residents to drive their own development initiatives, fostering long-term sustainability and resilience. Through partnerships, education, and capacity building, Temwa continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and communities in northern Malawi, paving the way for a brighter future.
