Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA)
Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) is a parastatal which was established in 1992 by the Laws of Malawi under Section 4 of the Copyright Act of 2016. Its main objective is to promote and protect interests of creative persons including collection of royalties and prevention of unauthorized use of copyrighted works. COSOMA currently performs two main roles: (1) acts as a Copyright Office within the Governmental setup and (2) as a Collective Management Organization for authors and artists. As a Copyright Office, the Society is responsible for the implementation of the Copyright Act of 2016, enforcement of the Law and provision of advice to government on copyright matters. As a collective management organization, it is responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of creative persons in the country and ensuring that they are adequately remunerated for use of their works.
