Water For People
Water For People was born out of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the largest nonprofit, scientific, and educational association dedicated to managing and treating water.
Water For People is a member of the national task force in charge of the government of Malawi’s strategy to reach universal water and sanitation access. Additionally, our participation in other national WASH networks and our support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Water Development is helping push Malawi toward this goal. Alongside other NGOs and partners, we are advocating for the Everyone Forever model to be adopted in three additional districts.

FAQ
What is the mission of Water For People Malawi and what programs do they implement?
Water For People Malawi is part of the global nonprofit organization Water For People, dedicated to promoting access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene education across Malawi. Their mission is to develop sustainable water and sanitation services that last for generations, ensuring that every family, school, and clinic has reliable access to these essential resources. By partnering with local communities, governments, and other stakeholders, they aim to create long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.
The organization implements a variety of programs focused on building and rehabilitating water points, constructing sanitation facilities, and promoting hygiene practices. They employ the "Everyone Forever" model, which strives for full coverage within the districts they work in, ensuring no one is left behind. By integrating community engagement and local capacity-building into their programs, Water For People Malawi helps communities take ownership of their water and sanitation systems, leading to sustainable management and maintenance.
How does Water For People Malawi ensure the sustainability of its water and sanitation projects?
Sustainability is at the core of Water For People Malawi's approach. They ensure long-term success by involving local communities and governments from the outset, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. The organization provides training and support to local water committees and entrepreneurs, enabling them to manage, operate, and maintain the water and sanitation systems effectively. This capacity-building ensures that the infrastructure continues to function well beyond the initial implementation phase.
Financial sustainability is also a key focus. Water For People Malawi helps establish affordable user fees and savings schemes that fund ongoing maintenance and repairs. They work with local supply chains to ensure that spare parts and technical support are readily available. By embedding these practices within the community and aligning them with local policies and regulations, the organization creates a self-sustaining model that can be replicated and scaled throughout the region.
