Cancer Grand Challenges is inviting global, interdisciplinary research teams to apply for awards to tackle two targeted challenges in gastroesophageal cancer research: understanding and reversing early tissue changes, and uncovering the biological mechanisms behind global incidence variation.

The Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, co-founded by Cancer Research UK and the Torrey Coast Foundation, is a global research program designed to tackle the most complex and urgent problems in cancer research by empowering large, interdisciplinary teams to pursue bold, transformative projects. This targeted call focuses on gastroesophageal cancers, which remain among the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide and present significant unmet needs due to late diagnosis and limited progress in prevention, detection, and treatment.

This funding call seeks to support international teams capable of bringing novel approaches, technologies, and thinking to address two major challenges: understanding and reversing early tissue changes leading to gastroesophageal cancers, and determining the biological mechanisms underpinning geographical variations in gastroesophageal cancer incidence. Teams are encouraged to integrate expertise from diverse disciplines, including biomedical sciences, engineering, technology, and social sciences, and to foster global collaboration that transcends traditional research boundaries.

Applicants must propose research that is innovative, high-impact, and addresses the articulated challenges through coordinated, multi-institutional efforts. Proposals should demonstrate a clear vision, robust objectives, and credible pathways to translation, with an emphasis on mechanistic discoveries that could ultimately improve outcomes for patients. Teams must be international in composition, with no more than 50% of funding or investigators based in a single country, and should include a Team Lead, up to seven Co-Investigators, and a full-time Programme Manager. Patient advocacy and engagement are also expected to be integrated into the research plans.

Awards of up to £25 million GBP for direct research costs are available, with a total funding envelope (including indirect costs) not exceeding £27.5 million GBP over 5 years. No more than 50% of a team’s funding may be issued to institutions in a single country. Indirect costs are capped at 10% where applicable, and teams must allocate at least 10% of their budget as discretionary funds for emerging scientific opportunities in later years.

Applications are open to global, interdisciplinary research teams from accredited research institutions and, where appropriate, small and medium-sized commercial entities. Teams must be international, with balanced participation across countries, and must not be led by commercial entities. Each team may only submit one application, and all team members must be able to adhere to the Cancer Grand Challenges terms and conditions. Letters of Interest must be submitted at least two weeks before the full application deadline to confirm eligibility.
