The Programme

We are excited to announce the expansion of the Graça Machel Trust (GMT)s Women Creating Wealth Programme-Intergenerational Edition (WCW-I) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation aimed at transforming Africa’s economies through meaningful and productive exchange and collaboration between women.

The Challenge

Africa has the youngest and fastest-growing continent in the world and by 2030, the number of young people in the African labour force will increase to 375 million. With limited formal employment opportunities and high levels of under-employment and lack of decent working conditions, young people across the continent continue to face the challenge of generating income. Young women in particular, face triple challenges linked to their conditions of being young, women and unemployed.

In the realm of entrepreneurship, businesses owned by women tend to be of smaller scale and have a smaller workforce. The findings from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor suggest that women are more inclined than men to operate sole proprietorships without any staff.

Our Solution

The Women Creating Wealth (WCW) programme is the Trust’s flagship entrepreneurship program designed to build women entrepreneurs confidence, skills & networks to scale their businesses and transition from income generation to wealth creation. Our entrepreneurship program has impacted 500 women entrepreneurs in Southern & and East Africa.

Our big audacious goal for WCW expansion is 10,000 businesswomen who are inspired and equipped to create $1 billion and 200,000 jobs in 5 years.

We are calling on young entrepreneurs with a vision and ambition to grow their business 10X in the next 5 years to join our pan-African business women movement.
