The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden Doctoral Fellowship, offered by TUD Dresden University of Technology’s Schaufler Lab, supports early-career researchers in Applied Linguistics or Digital Humanities to pursue doctoral research on energy cultures in transition.

The upcoming third funding phase of the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden runs from April 2027 to September 2030 and is guided by the theme “Energy Cultures in Transition.” The Lab brings social sciences and humanities researchers together with artists to explore relationships between technology, science and society.

Research under the theme examines how energy regimes, from petromodernity to nuclear culture and post-carbon futures, shape infrastructures, subjectivities, power relations, ecologies and knowledge systems. Areas of particular relevance include how energy transitions are represented and communicated, relationships between energy, labor, environment and consumer culture, and the role of colonialism, gender, geopolitics and social justice in shaping energy futures.

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month, plus a grant for material costs of EUR 150 and, where applicable, a family supplement of EUR 315 per child. Within the limits of available project funds, the Lab also covers conference travel costs.

The fellowship lasts two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension, and starts on April 1, 2027. Fellows have a shared office space and participate in the Kolleg’s English-language training program.

Applicants should hold an excellent master’s degree or equivalent in German Studies, Linguistics, Digital Humanities or a comparable discipline, and have relevant experience analyzing environmental, technological or energy-related discourses. English proficiency at C1 level is required; German language skills are required if the dissertation is written in German. Applicants are welcomed regardless of gender, origin, sexual orientation, worldview or disability, and women are expressly encouraged to apply.
