The Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden Doctoral Fellowship, offered by Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, supports early-career researchers in Civil and Digital Law to pursue doctoral research on how energy cultures and transitions intersect with law, technology, society, and ecological sustainability.

Initiated by The Schaufler Foundation together with TUD Dresden University of Technology, the Schaufler Lab is entering a third funding phase focused on “Energy Cultures in Transition.”

The research theme treats energy as a cultural phenomenon shaped by aesthetic, historical, political, ecological, economic, and socio-technological practices and systems. Relevant perspectives include the Energy Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, and the Digital Humanities.

In Civil and Digital Law, research may examine energy- and resource-intensive digital infrastructures and EU regulation; systemic risks of digital platforms and AI in relation to energy use, resource consumption, and ecological sustainability; ecological sustainability in digital law; and the territorial and extraterritorial limits of European digital regulation.

The fellowship supports independent research and academic qualification toward a doctorate, including a dissertation on a topic within “Energy Cultures in Transition” in Civil and Digital Law.

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month (approximately US$2,000), plus a EUR 150 materials grant (approximately US$200) and, where applicable, a EUR 315 supplement per child (approximately US$300).

The fellowship lasts two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension, and begins on April 1, 2027.

Applicants must have an above-average university degree in law and prior knowledge of, or a strong interest in, digital services and AI regulation and the role of energy cultures or ecological sustainability. English proficiency at C1 level is required; the dissertation may be written in German or English, with German proficiency required if writing in German.
