The Doctoral Fellowship in Educational Science/Media Education at Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden supports early-career researchers undertaking doctoral research on energy cultures and educational perspectives on energy relations and transformations through an interdisciplinary research program.

For its third funding phase, running from April 2027 to September 2030, the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden will work under the guiding theme “Energy Cultures in Transition.” The Lab brings together researchers in the social sciences and humanities and artists to explore relationships between technology, science and society.

In Educational Science/Media Education, the research focus includes representations and practices of energy relations and transformations, the role of energy in education and socialization, and critical perspectives on energy and transformation in educational and social contexts.

The guiding theme examines how energy regimes, from petromodernity and nuclear culture to post-carbon futures, shape material infrastructures, subjectivities, power relations, ecologies and knowledge systems. Research may also address energy transitions and resource paradigms, the links between resource and information economies, and the relationships between energy, labour, environment and consumer culture.

The fellowship begins on April 1, 2027, and lasts for two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension. Fellows undertake independent research and academic qualification toward a doctorate, including a dissertation on a topic within “Energy Cultures in Transition.”

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month, plus EUR 150 per month for material costs and, where applicable, a family supplement of EUR 315 per child.

Applicants should hold an excellent university degree, preferably in Educational Sciences or Media Education with a cultural or media studies focus, or a related field with clear connections to these disciplines. Relevant experience in educational or socialization-theoretical discourse concerning subjects and society, energy transitions, the environment, technology, everyday life or work is required. Applicants need English skills at C1 level or higher; a dissertation may be written in German or English, and German skills are required if writing in German.
