The Doctoral Fellowship Program is designed to support early-career Cultural Studies researchers pursuing doctoral research on energy as a cultural phenomenon and its connections to society.

The third phase comprises eight doctoral fellowships and an annually changing Artist in Residence program. The research theme approaches energy as a cultural phenomenon embedded in aesthetic, historical, political, ecological, economic and socio-technological practices and systems.

Fellows conduct independent research and pursue academic qualification toward a doctorate at TUD, completing a dissertation in Cultural Studies within the guiding theme. The role involves interdisciplinary dialogue, joint research with artists through the Schaufler Residency, science communication and outreach.

The fellowship provides EUR 1,850 per month, plus a grant for material costs of EUR 150 and, where applicable, a family supplement of EUR 315 per child. Within the limits of available project funds, the Schaufler Lab also covers conference travel costs.

The fellowship lasts two years, with the option of a 1.5-year extension, and starts on April 1, 2027. Fellows participate in the Kolleg’s English-language training program, which is mandatory. Applicants should be early-career researchers with an excellent university degree in Cultural Studies or a comparable field, such as Geography, Anthropology or History.

Demonstrably excellent English at C1 level is required; German is desirable but not required. The Lab welcomes applications regardless of gender, origin, sexual orientation, worldview or disability, and expressly encourages women to apply.

Applications in English must include the completed online application form, a letter of motivation, a tabular CV with an account of academic career, a copy of the most recent university degree certificate, and a research project exposé with a work and time schedule of no more than 20,000 characters.
