Organization

Help a Child is a Christian international NGO specialized in community development with its headquarters in the Netherlands. Founded in 1968, Help a Child’s mission is to improve the wellbeing of children living in poverty and crisis through supportive communities. Currently, Help a Child is operating in Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo, Rwanda, Somalia and India. Help a Child has been operating in Malawi since 2009.

We have been working with our partners in various regions of Malawi to implement community development programs that promote the well-being of children by empowering their families and communities. In cooperation with local NGO partners, Help a Child Malawi improves the resilience of households by implementing the Child Centered Community Development (CCCD) program. In this holistic program, various thematic interventions are combined. They focus on early childhood development, education & child rights, as well as youth development and economic empowerment.

Position

DRIVER/OFFICE MESSENGER

Main features

To provide secure and timely driving services to transport HaC staff and/or goods.

Objective of the function

Responsible for the proper maintenance of assigned HaC vehicle; safe and timely delivery of HaC staff, material supplies & correspondence to the designated destinations within and outside Rumphi.

Place in the organization: On day to day basis, the driver reports to the Finance and Admin officer. The Country Program Director is the formal Line Manager.

Result areas: 

Transportation of staff & goods

  • Discuss weekly transport plan and transportation requests of HaC staff with Finance and Administration officer.
  • Provide secure and timely driving services to transport staff and/or goods.
  • Load and offload luggage, goods and other material supplies with due regard to safety of goods and people
  • Facilitate airport pick up and drop off for HaC staff & visitors

Result: Secure & timely transportation of staff & goods 

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Schedule annual vehicle examination for service vehicles with the Transportation Department and apply for the renewal for the vehicle license
  • Determine when and what kind of maintenance the vehicle needs, keep track of general maintenance schedules, especially car tyre condition
  • Ensure sound running of the vehicles assigned and arrange minor repairs where necessary – Check oil and tyres properly and keep the service vehicles in clean condition, both inside and outside
  • Maintain the vehicle in a clean and neat manner
  • Maintain radio and telephone contact with the line manger during field missions
  • Maintain vehicles log sheets on a daily basis: maintain records of motor vehicle’s daily activity showing journey, mileage, consumables and signature of authorising officer
  • Adhere to the HaC safety and security policy, observe traffic and safety precautions to prevent motor vehicle accident and traffic violations.
  • Annually undertake a first aid refresher training to be able to offer first aid services in case of accidents
  • Keep track of timely car insurance renewals
  • Update monthly mileage records
  • Maintain log book of each service vehicle on daily basis

Result: Well-maintained & serviced vehicle

Office Support

  • Deliver payment transfers to the bank and/or the suppliers
  • Assist with postage and with pick up of office purchases
  • Conduct cash purchases for office expenditure
  • Ensure timely dispatch and delivery of all HaC related correspondence – both incoming and outgoing
  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Result: Secure & timely delivery and dispatch of office correspondence

Knowledge & Skills

  • Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE)
  • A clean and valid driver’s license
  • Successfully completed defensive driving course
  • Knowledge of car mechanics.
  • Minimum three (3) years relevant experience driving four-wheel drive vehicles
  • Fluent in English
  • Team player with good communication skills
  • Adherence to the core Christian values of HaC
