The Program for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields is offering support to researchers, graduate students, librarians and curators who require Japanese-language proficiency for Japan-related social sciences or humanities work or research.

The Japanese Language Program for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields is designed to enhance the Japanese-language proficiency of researchers, graduate students, librarians, and museum or art museum curators who require Japanese for their specialized work or research activities related to Japan. The program is conducted at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai, and emphasizes practical language use in research and professional contexts.

Accommodation in a single room at the Institute, weekday breakfast and lunch, national health and travel insurance, organized activities, and a subsidy for independent research activities (covering part of domestic accommodation and transportation costs) are provided to all participants.

Participants will independently conduct interviews with specialists in their field, plan visits to related facilities, and gather research materials, thereby acquiring skills to exchange, collect, and report information in Japanese. The program requires participants to plan their activities around a specific theme and to present their research achievements at the end of the course. While the training focuses on language development for research and specialist work, it does not provide education in specific academic fields.

The program runs from early October 2027 to late March 2028. Eligible applicants include researchers, teachers, librarians, and curators affiliated with organizations outside Japan, as well as full-time Master’s or Doctoral students at graduate schools outside Japan who plan to write their thesis on a Japan-related subject. Applicants must have at least N4 level Japanese proficiency, be in good health, and be nationals of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan (including Taiwan).
