Tarbell’s Institutional Grants program provides funding to media outlets and teams worldwide to build their capacity for ambitious journalism examining artificial intelligence and its effects on society.

Tarbell has supported AI journalism through reporting grants for individual stories since late 2024, and its institutional grantmaking builds on that work at a larger scale.

Funding may support journalism covering AI’s transformative potential, foundational explainers and analysis, accountability reporting on frontier AI companies, investigations into lobbying and campaign financing, AI policy, developments in China, AI incidents, and labor market impacts.

Institutional grants are $50K-$500K+. Tarbell aims to distribute at least $10 million in funding by the end of 2027.

The program expects mostly one-year grants while it is being established, with grants of two years or more expected to become the default later.

Eligible applicants include outlets and teams, including nonprofit and for-profit organizations worldwide. The outlet or distribution platform must be able to accept grant funding.

Applicants should describe the activities they seek funding for and their preferred grant duration, provide a proposed budget and details of existing project funding, outline the proposed team and its responsibilities, describe their current or projected audience and reach, and give specific examples of the work they would produce. Grantees retain full editorial control over their content.
