The IWT Challenge Fund Evidence grants support organisations to gather evidence for designing interventions that address environmental crime, including illegal wildlife trade, in developing countries.

The IWT Challenge Fund Evidence grants are designed to support projects that gather critical evidence to inform the design of interventions addressing environmental crime, including illegal wildlife trade, in developing countries. These grants aim to fill gaps in knowledge and approaches by encouraging applicants to clearly articulate the environmental crime problem they seek to address and to demonstrate how the evidence generated will be used to develop effective interventions.

The fund particularly welcomes proposals that focus on underrepresented environmental crime challenges and encourages projects such as market research to design and baseline demand reduction interventions. Evidence projects are expected to contribute to future intervention design, testing, or scaling, and applicants are encouraged to develop their evidence projects into full interventions in subsequent applications to the IWT Challenge Fund.

Projects must address at least one of the following themes: reducing demand for illegal wildlife trade (IWT) and other environmental crime products, strengthening law enforcement, ensuring effective legal frameworks, or developing sustainable livelihoods for communities affected by IWT and environmental crime.

Evidence grants range from £20,000 to £150,000, supporting projects lasting up to two years.

Lead Organisations may be based anywhere, though local or national leadership is strongly encouraged. Applicants must be organisations (not individuals), and foreign governments or their agencies cannot serve as Lead Organisations but may participate as partners. The maximum annual value of funds requested must not exceed 25% of the Lead Organisation’s average annual turnover or income for the previous three years.
