The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) invites research proposals from institutions and organizations worldwide to investigate the health outcomes of pet ownership and human-animal interactions.

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) annually issues a global call for research proposals to advance understanding of the health benefits of human-animal interaction, with a particular focus on the positive effects of companion animals on human health and well-being. This initiative seeks to support innovative, evidence-based studies that contribute actionable knowledge for individuals, communities, and professionals engaged in the human-animal bond.

Priority areas include research on the impact of pet ownership and human-animal interactions on child health and development, healthy aging, mental and physical health, and the well-being of both people and animals. HABRI is especially interested in studies that are translational, aiming to produce practical advice or guidelines for policymakers, veterinarians, pet care professionals, health practitioners, and pet owners. Topics of interest also encompass the role of pets in addressing public health and social crises, supporting underrepresented or minoritized populations, and advancing veterinary medicine and animal welfare.

There is no set maximum budget for proposals, but HABRI typically funds 5-6 projects per year, with project costs averaging around $50,000 and an average duration of about 20 months. All proposals must be cost-effective, realistic, and justified, and all dollar amounts should be expressed in U.S. dollars.

Eligible applicants include academic institutions and non-profit organizations worldwide. All funded studies must adhere to the highest standards of human and animal care and welfare, including IRB and/or IACUC approval, and must not involve invasive procedures. Proposals seeking capital project funding or primarily programmatic support are not eligible.
