The Girl Up’s Project Awards provide trust-based grants to youth leaders aged 13 to 25 for community-based ideas that advance gender justice and strengthen young people’s leadership, technical expertise and influence.

Project Awards are built around four principles: trust-based funding, youth-led action, feminism and movement-building. Girl Up describes trust as the starting point and emphasizes that youth leaders shape their project ideas, designs, budgets and decisions.

Projects should advance gender justice in the applicants’ communities. Possible areas of work include education, health, safety, economic autonomy, representation, climate, culture and care work; applicants may choose the issue and approach that make sense locally.

The awards are intended to build lasting local connections, strengthen Girl Up Clubs+ and link youth groups with a wider cohort of leaders. Applicants may request up to US$500 for Leader of Self or up to US$1,000 for Leader of Peers, and may request less than the maximum.

Funds are sent by international transfer in US dollars to the youth leader’s personal bank account or an authorized parent’s or guardian’s account. Project expenses may include materials, venue, transport, food, printing, digital tools, stipends and accessibility costs such as interpretation or childcare.

Youth leaders aged 13 to 25 with an idea to advance gender justice in their community may apply. Awards fund youth groups, activists and Girl Up Clubs+, not legal entities. Applicants do not need to belong to an existing Girl Up Club+. Applicants under 18 need an adult to authorize the application and co-sign receipt of funds.

Groups based in Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, North Korea, the Russian Federation, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or occupied parts of Ukraine cannot receive funds. Groups based in China, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iraq, Palestine, Venezuela or Yemen may require additional screening.
