The LEO Foundation Research Grants Program seeks applications to support investigator-initiated dermatology research projects led by PhD-level researchers affiliated with non-profit institutions worldwide.

The LEO Foundation Research Grants Program is designed to advance the field of dermatology by supporting high-quality research projects that deepen the understanding of skin biology and the mechanisms underlying dermatological diseases. The program welcomes proposals in basic, translational, technical, epidemiological, or clinical research, with a particular emphasis on investigator-initiated studies that are independent of commercial interests.

Priority is given to projects that improve knowledge of skin biology, explore medicinal, biological, chemical, or pharmacological mechanisms of skin diseases and their symptoms, or address clinical issues affecting individuals at risk of or living with skin diseases, including the impact on quality of life and societal costs. The Foundation does not support projects focused on skin cancer, research involving commercial companies, drug testing for commercial purposes, or aesthetic/cosmetic dermatology.

Funding typically ranges from DKK 2-4 million (approximately $280,000–$560,000 USD) for a period of 1-3 years, covering salaries, operating expenses, equipment, publication costs, travel, conference expenses, tuition fees for PhD students, and administrative costs up to 5%.

Eligible applicants must hold at least a PhD degree or equivalent, serve as the Principal Investigator, and be affiliated with a university, hospital, or other non-profit organization. Applications are accepted from researchers worldwide, but only one application per call is permitted per applicant. Applicants with an active LEO Foundation Research Grant or Dr Abildgaard Fellowship may only apply in the last year of their current grant period, and new grants cannot begin before the existing grant ends.

Applications must include a structured science abstract, background, project strategy and approach, references, team environment and resources, project significance and impact, and a layman’s abstract. Mandatory attachments include a short CV for the main applicant, a list of key publications, an overview of current external funding, and, if applicable, a resubmission cover letter and project illustrations. All project group members benefiting from the grant must also provide a one-page CV.
