Nominations open for the Holberg Prize

Applications are now open for the Holberg Prize to award outstanding contributions to research in the humanities, social sciences, law and theology.

The Prize may be awarded both for work within a particular academic discipline and for work of a cross-disciplinary nature, highlighting its broad recognition of scholarly excellence. The recipient must have had a decisive influence on international research, reinforcing the global significance of the award.

The Prize is worth NOK 6,000,000, making it one of the most substantial academic awards in the world. Anyone holding an academic position at a university, academy or other research institution may nominate candidates for the Holberg Prize, ensuring that the nomination process remains grounded in scholarly assessment.

The nominee must be an active researcher in the humanities, social sciences, law, or theology with a strong international impact. Nominations cannot be made by the candidate themselves, cannot be for groups or organizations, and must remain confidential. All materials must be submitted in English.

The selection process is led by the Board of the Holberg Prize, which awards the Prize at the recommendation of the Holberg Committee, composed of internationally renowned scholars in the relevant research fields. The Holberg Prize Laureate will be announced in March, and the Award Ceremony takes place in Bergen, Norway, in the first week of June.

The application requires details of both nominator and candidate, a 1000–3000 character justification, the candidate’s CV and publications, and the names of three potential referees. The nomination deadline is 15 June each year, giving nominators a clear timeframe for preparing and submitting complete applications.
