The Apply for Medical Student Summer Fellowship Program seeks applications to support medical students conducting summer research to build the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in neuro-oncology research.

Projects may focus on any type of brain tumor, benign or malignant, primary or metastatic, and may address pediatric, adolescent and young adult, adult, or all patient populations. Research areas include biomarkers, brain tumor biology, clinical research, diagnosis, drug delivery, etiology, genetics, imaging, epidemiology, novel therapeutics and risk assessment.

The program aims to provide an introductory learning experience that helps medical students develop the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in neuro-oncology research. Fellows receive $3,000 in support for a three-month summer term. The fellowship runs for a three-month summer term, with research conducted in a laboratory within a mentorship setting.

Applicants must be medical students enrolled and in good standing at a medical school, and must conduct the proposed research and training at the Lead Mentor’s institution. Applicants do not need to be enrolled at that institution or be U.S. citizens or residents, and previous ABTA Medical Student Summer Fellowship recipients are ineligible. A Lead Mentor is required and must hold a doctoral degree and a full-time faculty appointment at the institution, conduct brain tumor research, and commit time to supervising the applicant. One Co-Mentor may be included; Co-Principal Investigators are not allowed.
