Role Overview

A key aspect highlighted in our disability position paper is the requirement to establish a disability inclusion community of practice and over time create minimum standards of disability inclusion for our project offices, including barrier-free environments, physical space, and communication. There is also a strong commitment to review the progress on the commitments within the position paper, which are to form a continuous part of a routine reporting exercise.

As a step towards this, we propose the formation of a Disability Advisory Committee (DAC)

Role of DAC:

The DAC will consist a minimum of 5 members with representation from within the organisation and externally comprising of experts and practitioners in the sector who have a sound knowledge and practical experience of disability issues and be responsible to:

1) Guide in implementation of the commitments within the disability position paper alongside other stakeholders within the organization.

2) Support the coordination and actively participate in the disability inclusion community of practice.

3) Guide in monitoring and review of the progress of achieving the commitments laid out in the disability position paper and pulling out any emerging new needs over the period of implementation of the position paper. This will include coordination with various functions within the organisation.

4) Support the design, roll out and utilization of key tools to support in disability inclusion.

5) Support capacity building initiatives within the organization around disability inclusion working closely with the lead advisor. Advise on policy influencing interventions that will capitalize on existing national, regional and global advocacy efforts.

Essentials for membership:

• Experience in area of promoting disability inclusion within the organisation and programme.

• Experience of engaging with disability movements, campaigns and networks including influencing policies related to disability inclusion.

• Interest in engaging with a team to further the agenda of disability inclusion in VSO

• Availability (willingness to give time and actively participate in processes and meetings and undertake conversation with project teams and functions – at least contribute 8 to 10 hours in a week)

• Availability for a period of 12-month commitment.

• Experience of undertaking research and analysis and willingness to undertake research.
