The Rainforest Trust’s Feasibility Awards and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards provide grants to eligible nonprofit organizations to assess or establish protected and conserved areas in tropical and subtropical regions for the benefit of species, climate, and communities.

The funding supports ecosystem protection, endangered species conservation, climate mitigation, and community benefits through the creation and expansion of protected and conserved areas.

Rainforest Trust offers two main types of funding support: Feasibility Awards and Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards.

Feasibility Awards support assessments of the potential for establishing or expanding protected and conserved areas. These grants aim to address specific information gaps in conservation projects before applicants proceed with a Protected or Conserved Area Creation Award.

Eligible activities include developing legal pathways for protecting proposed sites and conducting field surveys to assess the presence and abundance of Critically Endangered or Endangered species. The average Feasibility Award is $10,000, while amounts exceeding $20,000 may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Protected or Conserved Area Creation Awards provide funding for establishing or expanding protected and conserved areas on land or at sea. Supported approaches include formal designation, land titling, land purchase, and other recognised methodologies, such as Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs).

These awards aim to support project implementers in establishing new, lasting, and sustainable protected or conserved areas that align with community and government needs and priorities. There is no fixed maximum grant amount, and applications are assessed individually.
