Medical Council of Malawi (MCM)

Founded 1987

The Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) is a Statutory Corporation established under the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act No. 17 of 1987 Chapter 36:01 of the Laws of Malawi. MCM exists to protect the general public and guide the medical, dental and allied health professions. MCM has the mandate of regulating practitioners and health facilities, regulating training of health care workers, and managing health care complaints.

The following is the composition of the Medical Council of Malawi:

  • Chief of Health Services of the Ministry of Health (Ex-officio member)
  • one medical practitioner working in the public service
  • one dentist working in public service
  • one medical practitioner representing the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM)
  • five members representing the Medical Association of Malawi (MAM)
  • one medical practitioner representing College of Medicine
  • Secretary for Justice and Solicitor General (Ex-officio member)
  • At least three members from the general public of good standing, one of whom should be either a medical practitioner or a dentist in full-time private practice
