GeoCommons, a grantmaking programme led by NLnet Foundation, invites researchers and developers to build and strengthen open geospatial technologies that support practical applications and a robust geospatial commons.

Described as the first major public-benefit investment in the wider free and open-source geospatial ecosystem, GeoCommons is part of a programme that will award €3.6 million in research and development grants between now and 2030.

The programme welcomes contributions across all layers of the open geospatial technology stack, including libraries, tools and datasets, as well as improvements to security, efficiency, data provenance, software supply chain management, reproducibility and agility.

Projects are intended to strengthen open geospatial commons and help deliver, mature and scale foundational technologies, from reusable building blocks to complete applications for public, private, academic and civil society use cases. Project results must be released under a recognised free or open-source licence.

Project proposals should be between €5,000 and €50,000, with the possibility of scaling them up where there is proven potential. The programme also offers practical support services for free and open-source projects, including accessibility scans, security audits, licensing and copyright compliance support, and technical troubleshooting.

Researchers and developers working on geospatial commons are invited to submit proposals. Projects must make a concrete contribution to strengthening open geospatial commons.

Generative AI projects are outside the programme’s scope unless the technology is already widely used throughout society, with more than one million active human users, and is directly relevant to geospatial commons. This restriction does not apply to other forms of automation, including non-generative-AI machine learning.
