Donor Name: The British Academy

The British Academy is designed to support writing workshops that help early career researchers in select developing countries publish in high impact humanities and social sciences journals.

The programme aims to cultivate professional networks, mentorship, and research partnerships, while equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the academic requirements of international journals. Workshops are designed to stimulate career development, encourage the uptake of research from developing countries, and foster connections with academics and journal editors both nationally and internationally.

Funding for each workshop is set at a maximum of £30,000 (approximately $38,100 USD), which can be used for travel and related expenses, subsistence, clerical assistance, childcare support, networking, and meeting or conference costs. The award duration is two years, allowing for significant follow-on and follow-up activities to ensure lasting impact.

Eligible applicants must be of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience and hold an established role in an eligible university or research institute in the UK, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Ghana, Philippines, Vietnam, or Least Developed Countries. Each project must include at least one researcher based in the eligible developing countries if the Principal Investigator is UK-based, or one UK-based researcher if the Principal Investigator is based in one of the eligible developing countries. All proposals must be ODA-eligible, with a primary objective directly relevant to the problems of developing countries.
