The Branco Weiss Fellowship provides up to five years of funding for outstanding postdoctoral researchers from any discipline to pursue independent scientific projects at the host institution of their choice worldwide.

The Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science support exceptional young scientists who are passionate about pursuing research that goes beyond the mainstream and communicating their work to a broader audience. The fellowship is international in scope and open to postdoctoral researchers from all scientific disciplines and nationalities, with no restrictions on biological age.

Fellows receive up to CHF 600,000 over a maximum of five years, which can be used to cover salary, doctoral student salaries, equipment, consumables, travel, and other justified research expenses. The fellowship is administered through the host institution, with annual payments contingent on progress reports, and unspent funds must be returned at the end of the fellowship.

Applicants must have obtained their PhD no more than five years before the submission deadline and must not hold a permanent academic position such as professor or lecturer. The proposed research project can be carried out at any academic host institution worldwide, and the application must include a detailed project description, abstract, CV, motivation letter, publications, reviewer suggestions, and an invitation letter from a mentor at the host institution.

The fellowship is awarded in two phases: an initial pioneer phase of two and a half years, followed by an exploitation phase of equal length, contingent on a successful review and site visit. Fellows are encouraged to seek additional third-party funding during their tenure, and mobility between host institutions is supported with approval.
