The Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Biomedical Research support exceptional postdoctoral researchers transitioning to independent careers in HIV/AIDS research.

The Mathilde Krim Fellowships in Biomedical Research were established by amfAR to advance the careers of outstanding postdoctoral researchers working in the field of HIV/AIDS biomedical research. The program is designed to facilitate the transition of early-career scientists to independent research positions within academic or nonprofit institutions worldwide.

The fellowships specifically support innovative biomedical research projects relevant to the prevention, treatment, or cure of HIV, with the expectation that the research direction is distinct from the mentor’s work and demonstrates the fellow’s potential for future independence. The program does not support epidemiological, behavioral, social science, health services, policy, or implementation science studies.

Funding is provided in two phases: Phase 1 offers up to $180,000 over two years, including up to 10% indirect costs, to support postdoctoral research; Phase 2 provides up to $50,000 for one additional year if the fellow secures an independent research position at an academic or nonprofit institution before the end of or within six months following Phase 1. Unexpended funds from Phase 1 may be carried forward to Phase 2.

Eligible applicants must have completed a research or clinical doctorate approximately three to six years prior to October 2026, be affiliated with a nonprofit research institution anywhere in the world, and be mentored by an experienced investigator at the same institution. Applicants must also be primary author on at least one impactful publication in a leading peer-reviewed journal and have presented at major scientific conferences.
