The Microbiota and Women’s Health International Grant Program is pleased to announce its applications to support research on the role of microbiota in women’s health and disease.

Each year, the call focuses on a specific theme selected by an International Scientific Committee, with the 2025 edition emphasizing the mechanisms, transmission, and impact of male-female genital microbiome interactions, particularly in relation to vaginal dysbiosis and bacterial vaginosis.

The annual grant is set at €200,000 and is awarded to researchers affiliated with universities, hospitals, or other research institutions to finance equipment, operations, or staffing costs. The maximum project duration is three years, and institutional overhead costs cannot exceed 10% of the total grant. Grants are not awarded to individuals but to institutions, and a detailed budget with a proposed timeline is required.

Eligible applicants include MDs, PhDs, or Pharm-Ds working in relevant fields such as gynecology, obstetrics, microbiology, infectious diseases, internal medicine, or oncology. There are no geographic restrictions, and applicants from all countries are welcome. Previous recipients of the Women’s Health international grant must wait three years before reapplying, and members of the Scientific Committee or their laboratories are not eligible to apply as Principal Investigators.

Proposals may include mechanistic studies on how the penile microbiome contributes to the establishment, persistence, and recurrence of vaginal dysbiosis, as well as research on microbial transmission dynamics, adaptation of BV-associated taxa, and the effects of interventions such as antibiotics, partner therapies, circumcision, or live biotherapeutic products. Projects related to sexually transmitted infections, except for bacterial vaginosis, are not eligible.
