EMKP Documentation Grants for Endangered Material Knowledge

Donor Name: Endangered Material Knowledge Programme

Reference URL:https://www.emkp.org/documentation-grants/

The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme offers annual grants to support the documentation of living material knowledge systems at risk of disappearing, open to knowledge holders, practitioners, and scholars worldwide.

The programme focuses on knowledge systems related to the making, use, repair, and re-purposing of material objects, spaces, architecture, performances, and environments, and aims to create a digital record of these practices for public access and scholarly use.

The programme encourages applications that involve local community members and knowledge holders as part of the project team, and prioritizes work where the need for funding is greatest, particularly outside Western Europe, North America (excluding Mexico), Japan, or Australia, though exceptions may be considered with strong justification.

Small grants provide up to £20,000 for projects lasting up to one year, while large grants offer up to £100,000 for projects of up to two years. Eligible costs include travel, subsistence, accommodation, research assistant allowances, documentation equipment, insurance, translation and transcription, digital deposition, and community engagement activities (up to £1,000 for small grants and £2,000 for large grants). Training in digital documentation methods is provided to successful applicants, with associated costs covered separately by EMKP.

Applicants must be affiliated with an appropriate academic or community organisation acting as the Host Institution, which is responsible for financial oversight and ethical compliance. The programme requires that digital assets produced be deposited both in the EMKP repository and locally within the country and community of documentation, under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, ensuring open access and proper attribution.
